DIABETES AND THE EYE

Diabetes is a frequent cause of blindness in the United States.  In fact, it is the leading cause of blindness in patients aged 20-64 years.  It is believed that high blood sugars cause damage to the fine blood vessels of the eye, resulting in hemorrhaging and protein leakage inside the eye and abnormal blood vessel formation.  The damage to the fine blood vessels of the eye mirror damage to other fine blood vessels in the body, including those of the kidney and nervous system.  Examination of the blood vessels of the eye can lead to a better understanding of a diabetic patient’s overall blood sugar control.   Diabetic patients should have a comprehensive dilated eye examination at least once a year.  If you are a diabetic and have not had a dilated eye examination in the past year, then please call our office and schedule an appointment.
